Hey there, future bride! I'm a professional bridal dress alterations expert with a passion for making every bride feel like a princess on her big day. With years of experience under my belt, I've had the pleasure of working with countless brides-to-be by altering their wedding dress to fit to perfection.
As a bride, you've got a lot on your plate, and finding the right seamstress can be overwhelming. But don't worry, I'm here to guide you through the process. I'll share my insider knowledge to help you make an informed decision. Here are my top 7 tips to select the perfect seamstress for your wedding dress alterations.
1. Ask for Recommendations & Read Reviews
Ask friends and family for recommendations. Ask your bridal boutique for recommendations. Do an internet search for local bridal dress alterations experts and read all the reviews.
2. Check Their Portfolio
Does the seamstress have bridal dress alterations experience? Does she/he have a professional phone number listing? Does she/he have a professional establishment with set work hours? If they work from home, do they have a specific workspace set aside? What forms are payment are accepted by the establishment?
3. Ask About Their Experience
Find out how long they've been in business and how many weddings they've worked on. Does the seamstress/business answer the phone professionally? Are they willing to spend the time talking to you and answering all your questions? Are they pleasant and straightforward or do they sound as if they don’t have time to spend answering your questions? Communication is the most important part of working with your seamstress.
4. Schedule An In-Person Consultation
Schedule a consultation with the seamstress you have chosen to determine if you are able to work with this individual. You will be seeing them for a minimum of 6 weeks, and it is best if you feel comfortable at your appointments and are able to communicate with them effectively. If you feel the individual is not giving you their full attention or appears to be in a hurry to move on, think about taking your dress elsewhere.
5. Choose a Seamstress That Sets Appointments!
I can’t tell you how many times brides have brought me a dress at the last minute because the seamstress that had their dress had not started working on it even though that individual had the dress for several weeks or even months.
6. Get a Definitive Cost For Your Alterations
This cost cannot be given over the phone, because the seamstress must see the dress on the bride and determine the structure, materials, and how the dress is put together to provide a timeline and costs. That being said, some things are very hard to estimate, such as re-beading when there have been alterations done in areas that have beads. This is charged by the hour but perhaps you can get an estimate for the number of hours needed.
7. Trust your instincts!
Ultimately, choose a seamstress who makes you feel comfortable and confident. Your wedding dress is a big investment, and you want to make sure it’s in good hands.
Your dream wedding dress is only as good as its fit on the day of your wedding! Keeping these best practices in mind will help you to find the perfect person to make alterations to your dress and make sure it fits you as it should. With the right alterations expert, you'll feel gorgeous walking down the aisle!
